Dell Dimension XPS One
July 22nd, 2009I recently worked on a Dell Dimension XPS One A2010. Some of the specs that it orginally came with were:
-Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit Edition Operating System
-Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
-2GB PC5400 RAM(2x1024)
-250GB Hard Drive
-DVD+/-RW Burner Drive
*I was fortunet enough that the customer had the disc's that were provided by dell. I had to install ALL but two drivers in order for ALL the drivers in device manager to work properly. I will post them one by one here in the next couple of months so that you know which ones I went through trial and error with. I personally want to say that the idea behind the pc was good, but not thouroughly tested for problems and fixes.
**Customer has reported that the touch pad used for the DVD drive has never work and dell support did nothing about it. I personally looked at it and I agree with the customer. I could never get it to work. I had to manually eject CD from "my computer" or using the "hot key" on the keyboard, but what if you had to get a universal replacement keyboard, like a Microsoft or Logitech for example.... then what would you do?
I used to sell this exact pc at Staples when I worked there as a Business Machines Sales Associate and Easy Tech. I never really played much with the display model a whole lot. But I recently worked on one that was purchased a little over a year ago. When I first looked at the computer. It wouldn't boot to the desktop once you selected a user account, both in windows and in safe mode. My orginal thought at the moment was possible malware or virus. I pulled the hard drive out and used a cable converter to plug it in to my USB port on my Tech Computer and used 5 different anti-virus scanners and sadly to say, none of them detected any virus. So then after putting the hard drive back into the dell, I ran full system diagnostic's on the hard drive to look for failure. Sadly again, nothing was found or detected. I then tried to run scans and repairs on windows it's self found errors but none of the repairs fixed it. I ended up manually backing the hard drive up using my cable converter and used the dell image restore to get it back to windows. Everything looked like it reloaded successfully. Installed my customers programs and backup. Did all the windows updates. Let the computer run for an entire day and randomly restarted the computer. Nothing went wrong. Returned the computer. About 6 weeks later, the computer crashed, and the exact same problem came back. This time though it started giving the "BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH". Again, I thourghly ran diagnostic's on the hard drive. Again everything checked out. Did a full system diagnostic's scan and found out that one of the sticks of RAM went bad. Also, the dell image restore was shot too. Reloaded windows, all drivers, programs the customer wanted, and all windows updates. Kept the computer for 48 hours running and random restarts. No problems. Returned to customer. Did a 30 day follow up. Everything is still good. Did a 90 day follow up. Everything is still working good.
HP Pavilion 782C Windows XP Home Drivers
May 29th, 2009On 5/25/09, I had to reformat the hard drive due to virus's and malware. Unfortunely I did not have the recovery disc's so I had to use a OEM Windows XP Home w/SP2 disc to reinstall windows. After I got to the desktop, the first thing I did was look to see what drivers I needed to load. I only needed the audio(sound) driver. Windows already had the chipset, video, ethernet, and modem drivers built in. I looked on hp's website under the pc's specific drivers page and unfortunetly the audio driver wasn't listed. I also tried to do google search for it looking at the manufacturer specs and also using the chip directly from the motherboard. I did load several that google returned but none of them worked and the last one ended up preventing windows to load. I finally got onto chat with HP tech support and they did manage to get me the right audio driver for this computer. I wanted to post it on my blog for others so that it would be easier to find. Hope this helps you out. Anyone is always welcome to contact for my help in obtaining drivers.
